During the Preliminary Phase of a Project
- Confer with Architects, owners, other Engineers and regulatory Agencies to establish project requirements.
- Formulate the scope of soils and foundation investigation.
- Prepare economic studies of alternate structural systems to meet the functional requirements of the building and of foundation systems to meet the site conditions.
- Prepare preliminary structural design required to define space needs of structural elements as well as to accommodate architectural, mechanical and electrical subsystems.
- Prepare design criteria and outline specifications for structural aspects of the project.
- Consult on building form, materials, methods of construction as related to the structure, costs, building code requirements, etc.
During the Design Phase of a Project
- Confer with the Architect and other team consultants to plan and coordinate the structure into the building.
- Prepare structural calculations for design loads on the complete structure, including wind effects, seismic loads and thermal movements.
- Prepare structural Contract Drawings with details defining construction work.
- Prepare structural specifications for incorporation in the project specifications.
- Participate in establishing the materials testing, fabrication inspection and construction inspection program for the project.
During the Construction Phase of a Project
- Prepare structural addenda as may be required during the bidding period.
- Provide consultation on structural aspects of the project construction.
- Prepare supplementary sketch details needed for clarification or resolution of field problems.
- Review shop drawings submitted by the Contractor.
- Review laboratory, shop and mill test reports of materials, fabrication, equipment, etc.
- Observe construction in progress to achieve conformance with drawings and specifications.

- Design the building to meet unusual loads or to satisfy unique or abnormal tolerances.
- Field measure existing construction when required for designing additions or alterations to a building.
- Prepare preliminary and final structural construction cost estimates.
- Prepare alternate designs requested by the owner or Architect for the purpose of obtaining alternate bids.
- Redesign for major changes requested by the owner or Architect after approval of preliminary plans.
- Evaluate and recommend on Construction Contractor's claims.
